Planning a wedding day timeline can feel surprisingly overwhelming. Most couples quickly realize that planning a wedding involves a lot more than saving ideas on Pinterest and booking a venue.
As a Nashville wedding photographer, one of the ways I care for my couples is by helping them build a thoughtful, customized timeline for their day. A well-planned timeline ensures we have enough space for every meaningful moment, keeps the day flowing smoothly, and removes a layer of stress so you can stay present and enjoy it all.
It also helps make sure there’s enough time for the images that matter most — getting ready moments, portraits, wedding party photos, and those quiet in-between memories that often become favorites.
That said, not every photographer provides timeline assistance, and if you’re early in the planning process you might be wondering where to even start.
So I’ve created a few sample wedding day timelines to help guide you.
These examples are meant to give you a realistic idea of how a wedding day can flow and how much time is typically needed for each part of the day. Most couples haven’t planned a full wedding timeline before — but after photographing many weddings, I promise it becomes much easier to map out.
Each of the example timelines below includes a first look, which allows for a more relaxed pace and more portrait time earlier in the day.
If you’re choosing a more traditional approach and waiting to see each other at the ceremony, you’ll simply want to allow additional time after the ceremony for family photos, wedding party portraits, and couple portraits.
Below you’ll find three example timelines based on common ceremony times:
-
A 3:00 PM ceremony
-
A 5:00 PM ceremony
-
A 7:00 PM ceremony
And at the bottom of the post, you can download printable versions to help you start mapping out your own wedding day.
