October engagement photos at Cheekwood Estate & Gardens — Nashville, Tennessee

There’s something about October at Cheekwood that feels almost cinematic. The light goes golden earlier, the gardens shift into their rich autumn palette, and the whole estate takes on this quiet, unhurried magic — which made it the absolute perfect backdrop for Jon and Caroline’s engagement session.
From the moment we met at the gates, I knew this was going to be one of those Cheekwood engagement sessions I’d think about for a long time.

Cheekwood Estate & Gardens has long been one of my favorite places to photograph couples in Nashville. Tucked into the Belle Meade neighborhood, the 55-acre property offers everything a photographer could dream of — sweeping garden paths, moody woodland trails, manicured lawns with the historic mansion as a backdrop, and in October, bursts of warm color from the changing leaves.
For couples looking for engagement photos that feel timeless and editorial without being stiff or formal, Cheekwood delivers every single time. It’s the kind of location that doesn’t need much from you — it just works.
Jon and Caroline have this easy, genuine warmth between them that translated so beautifully in front of the camera. They weren’t trying to perform — they were just themselves, and honestly, that’s what makes for the most extraordinary images.
We wandered through the garden paths as the late afternoon sun filtered through the trees, and I kept finding myself thinking: this is why I do what I do. Watching two people so completely at ease with each other, laughing, whispering, stealing quiet moments — it never gets old.
Caroline wore a warm rust-toned dress that complemented the October foliage perfectly (a styling tip I often share with clients: lean into the season!), and Jon was classic and handsome in neutral tones that let her light up the frame. Together, they were effortlessly stunning.

Some sessions have one or two standout moments. Jon and Caroline’s session felt like it was made entirely of them.
The way Jon looked at Caroline when she wasn’t looking — that one’s going on the wall of my heart forever. The quiet moment they shared sitting on the stone steps near the mansion, foreheads almost touching, completely unaware of me. And the genuine laughter when I gave them a prompt that clearly caught them off guard (I’ll never tell what I said).
These are the images that remind me that engagement sessions aren’t just about beautiful photos — they’re about documenting who you are right now, in this season of anticipation and joy, before the wedding day rushes in.

If you’re a Nashville couple considering Cheekwood for your engagement session, here are a few things to know:
Best time of year: Spring (April–May) and Fall (September–October) are peak season for good reason. The gardens are stunning and the light is incredible.
Best time of day: I always recommend a late afternoon session — the golden hour light at Cheekwood is genuinely unmatched.
What to wear: Lean into the season. Earthy tones, jewel colors, and timeless silhouettes photograph beautifully here. Avoid loud patterns or overly trendy pieces that may date your photos.
Permits: Cheekwood requires a photography permit for professional sessions — your photographer should handle this in advance.
Parking & arrival: Plan to arrive 10–15 minutes early. The estate is large and you’ll want time to settle in before we start shooting.
